San Antonio Spurs

Brandon Lucero here, Journalist and Photographer dedicated to covering the San Antonio Spurs. I served onboard the USS San Antonio while in the United States Navy! I utilized my GI Bill and went to college where I received my Associates and Bachelors degrees in Journalism and Photography!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Boston Celtics 125 to 116 as WeMVP hits 8 three pointers and J. Brown gets ejected! V. Wembanyama (39pts,11rebs,2blks) was in MVP form against the Celtics in a very competitive game! The MVP candidate was taking what the defense gave him and hit 8 three pointers that opened up the floor for the rest of his teammates! The back court of D. Fox (25pts,9ast) and S. Castle (18pts,9ast,6rebs) wrecked havoc in the lane as Wemby opened up enough space for the talented guards to attack the paint all night! 18 assist between the two guards showed just how important it is they have the necessary space to operate, in order to split the defense and find open teammates! D. Vassell (14pts) also had a very quiet but efficient night and was steady for the Spurs. This team has won 16 of 17 and is rounding into shape for the postseason!

Celtics: J. Tatum (24pts) and D. White (34pts,7ast) kept the Celtics in the game as J. Brown (8pts) was ejected for the second time in his career. He was very upset about a call and let his emotions get the best of him! It could have been a different game for the Celtics had he walked away and asked his coach to challenge the play! If Tatum gets back into form this team could represent the East in the Finals!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs beat the Houston Rockets 145 to 120 in a game where the Spurs separated from the Rockets after halftime! V. Wembanyama (29pts,8rebs,4blks) was dominant from the opening tip! He scored the Spurs first 8 points and never looked back! D. Fox (20pts,10ast) and S. Castle (23pts,5ast) lead the attack by pushing the ball and finding mismatches all night! D. Harper (19pts,6ast) and K. Johnson (20pts) each maintained the pressure off the bench! This Spurs team is 1st in the NBA in every positive statistical category over the last 16 games by going 15-1 and are making a case for best team in the NBA! Watch out for the Spurs!

Rockets: K. Durant (23pts) and A. Thompson (23pts) tried thier best to keep the Rockets close, but the Spurs were too much from the second quarter on! A. Sengun (16pts) and R. Sheppard (17pts) played decent for the Rockets but were a liability on the defensive end!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs beat the L.A Clippers 116 to 112 in a hard fought 25 point comeback that is one of the biggest comebacks in the past 25 years! V. Wembanyama (27pts,10rebs,4blks) and D. Fox (19pts,9ast) helped keep the Spurs in the game and helped close out the Clippers! The comeback started in the third quarter with J. Champagnie (20pts,10rebs) and C. Bryant (5pts,2stl,1blk) playing solid defense and hitting timely shots. Champagnie had 17pts in the third quarter and his defense and hustle along with Bryant chipped away at the Clippers lead. The energy was contagious and the rest of the team showed why San Antonio is known for, “Never Retreat, Never Surrender!” The Alamo was legendary for that statement many years ago, as well as this Spurs team last night against the Clippers!

Clippers: K. Leonard (30pts) was a thorn in the Spurs side all night. The former Spur and enemy #1 to many Spurs fans was booed everytime he touched the ball. Some pundits and critics want the Spurs fans to forgive him, but they will never forget what he did to their beloved franchise! He was a great player for the Spurs and helped them get over the top and beat the Heat in the finals in 2014. For that I will always have respect for Leonard, but just like other Spurs fans I will never respect what he did to get out of San Antonio and what he did to damage the Spurs reputation. The Spurs ended up moving on and have a franchise player that is so much better as a person and has the potential to be one of the best ever! Character is always more important than reputation! Something Mr. Leonard and his uncle will never understand!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Detroit Pistons at home 121 to 106 in a physical game that could be a finals preview! V. Wembanyama (38pts,16rebs,5blks) was amazing for the Spurs! He set the tone right from the jump and was a force on both ends of the court! Speaking of setting the tone, D. Fox (29pts,5rebs,3ast) did just that right from the opening tip! The All-Star guard was focused and settled in his offensive game early. S. Castle (11pts,12ast,2stl) was also impactful by getting the team going on offense but also playing solid defense on the Pistons best player! J. Champagnie (16pts) made very sound decisions with the ball and has played well for the Spurs this season. The Pistons were physical with the Spurs early and often, but the Spurs stayed focused on playing their brand of basketball as well as playing solid defense and making smart decisions!

Pistons: C. Cunningham (26pts) worked extremely hard for every point and was the focus of the Spurs defense. J. Duren only had 7points in 12 mins because of foul trouble and the fact that he was more worried about playing physical against Wemby. If he settles in on just playing from within the Pistions could make a deep run in the East!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Philadelphia 131 to 91 in an epic victory that seen most of the Spurs supporting cast handle business! Eight players scored in double figures for a Spurs team that wanted to waste no time in getting another dub in the win column. D. Vassell (22pts) and D. Harper (22pts) lead the way in a forty point victory where just about every Spur scored on the night. The team looked hungry and Wemby (10pts,8rebs,6blks) was mostly just a screener and a defensive anchor!

Sixers: T. Maxey (21pts) was the only player to show up and play hard for the Sixers. They were without J. Embid and lost VJ. Edgecomb for the season in the first quarter as well as having P. George out for a drug suspension. They will make the playoffs but if most of the team is out they won’t last long!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs lost to the New York Knicks 114 to 89 in a non-competitive game that ended the Spurs 11 game win streak. V. Wembanyama (25pts,13rebs,4blks) was up to task and played well, unfortunately the rest of the Spurs were not up to par. D. Fox (7pts) and S. Castle (13pts) were inconsistent and had bad game. D. Vassell (18pts) played well but needed more help from his teammates. The Spurs lost one game and the sky is not falling, March is usually the time they gear up for a deep run!

Knicks: This Knicks team is a top contender in the East with scorers like M. Bridges (25pts) and J. Brunson (24pts) contributing. They will be a difficult out for any team in the playoffs and could make a run to the finals!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs extended their win streak to 11 games in an impressive undefeated February against the struggling Brooklyn Nets! J. Champagnie (26pts) the Brooklyn native was lights out from deep (6-9) in front of his family and friends to help lead the Spurs to victory and keep the win streak alive! D. Vassell (14pts) and S. Castle (18pts) both played solid on both sides of the ball! The point guard attack of D. Fox (14pts) and D. Harper (12pts) were also outstanding and maintained pace throughout the game! V. Wembanyama (12pts) was mostly a defensive anchor for the Spurs as the guards did most of the damage. K. Johnson (13pts) was also a factor off the bench and helped the Spurs keep the lead.

Nets: Brooklyn is in a rebuilding mode and seems like they are more focused on what to do after the season. MPJ (25pts) and N. Claxton (12pts) are the only trade pieces that will yield a return back. Hopefully they find someone to build on or they will become the N.Y. Jets of the NBA! Speaking of N.Y. the Spurs play the Knicks next game in a cup championship rematch!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Toronto Raptors 110 to 107 in a comeback victory north of the border! V. Wembanyama (12pts,8rebs,5blks) had an off night against the Dinos but helped seal the victory with a late block on former Spurs J. Poeltl. D. Fox (20pts) and D. Vassell (21pts) were critical in the victory helping the Spurs keep pace against a hungry Raptors team. S. Castle (13pts,5ast) and J. Champagnie (10pts,6rebs,5ast) also helped lead the comeback that had the Spurs down by 15 points in the third quarter. D. Haper (15pts,7ast) was also a huge reason the Spurs won this game. He made a bad turnover down the stretch and even missed two free throws but got his own rebound and played solid during most of the game! The win gives the Spurs 10 in a row and keeps momentum heading into March!

Raptors: The Toronto Raptors came to play against the Spurs and almost pulled off the victory with S. Barnes (15pts) and B. Ingram (20pts) giving the Raptors a 10 point lead in the fourth quarter. J. Poeltl (15pts,7rebs) was solid for the Raptors but Wemby made short work of his attempt at the rim late in the game! This team should make the playoffs and will be a tough out for any higher seed!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Detroit Pistons 114 to 103 in a hard fought game where both teams played solid tough basketball but the Spurs pushed back and extended their win streak to 9 games! V. Wembanyama (21pts,17rebs,6blks) was the anchor for the Spurs on both ends of the court! He gives the defense an identity and cleans up any missed rotations by the Spurs guards. S. Castle (16pts,11ast) was awesome on defense while guarding the best player on the Pistons. He also gives the Spurs a swagger on the defensive side by playing physical and tough and not backing down from anyone in the NBA! J. Champagnie (17pts) and D. Vassell (28pts) were spot on with their shots and played solid defense against the Pistons. When both are hitting their shots the Spurs are tough to beat! D. Fox (10pts,7rebs,7ast) had an off night offensively but was contributing in other ways and showcasing great leadership for a young Spurs team that needs a solid veteran presence! This win was more than just a plus in the standings. The Spurs showed they can beat a tough physical team and are willing and capable of going deep in the NBA playoffs!

Pistons: J. Duren (25pts,14rebs) is a solid NBA big and a reason the Pistons have one of the best records in the NBA! He played solid and never backed down! C. Cunningham (16pts,10ast) was 5-26 from the field thanks to a large part in S. Castle hounding him all game. He will have better games but the All-NBA guard had trouble getting free from a Spurs defense that was looked on him from the jump! Look for the Pistons to make some noise in the post season and maybe even make a run at the finals!

  • Spurs: The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Sacramento Kings 139 to 122 extending their win streak to 8 games. V. Wembanyama (28pts,15rebs,6ast,4blks) lead the charge and was impactful right from the jump. D. Fox (18pts,5ast) and S. Castle (18pts,8rebs) controlled the back court and pace against the Kings. H. Barnes (14pts), D. Harper (12pts) and K. Johnson (18pts) each had moments that helped turn the game into a blowout in the fourth quarter! When the Spurs bench unit and the starters are pushing the pace and punishing teams on both ends of the ball, the Spurs are one of the best teams in the NBA!

Kings: The Sacramento Kings look like they were motivated to get a win through 3 quarters of this game, but in the fourth quarter the Spurs turned the tide and all hope was lost! K. Murray (20pts) and M. Raynaud (16pts) are building blocks for the future. D. DeRozan (20pts) and other older vets will need to be traded or released this season so the Kings can actually do a rebuild from the bottom up. Hopefully they do what is necessary for their fans and city!
